A Review on The Relationship Between Bipolar Disorder and Artistic Creativity
Bipolar disorder is a common mental health condition characterized by intense emotional fluctuations. This disorder includes extreme bursts of enthusiasm and energy, with fluctuations between symptoms of mania and depression, as well as periods of deep sadness and hopelessness. In addition, such emotional and energetic fluctuations can enhance creative processes and artistic productivity in some individuals. Researchers point out that many famous artists struggle with bipolar disorder and that this condition fosters their creativity. It is stated that individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder put forward innovative and bold projects with high energy and self-confidence specific to the manic period, and reflect their deep emotional experiences in their artistic expressions during depressive periods. On the other hand, bipolar disorder also poses serious challenges and risks for individuals. The increase in creativity may not be sustainable due to the personal and social problems brought about by the disorder. Treatment and social support are critical for individuals to both maintain their mental well- being and continue their artistic productivity in a balanced way. Therefore, the complex and multidimensional nature of the relationship between bipolar disorder and artistic creativity requires both areas to be carefully addressed. This traditional review aims to examine the relationship between bipolar disorder and artistic creativity. Keywords: Bipolar disorder, Art, Creativity.
